Boy Writes Poem to Stop Cuts to Memphis Retiree Health Care
July 11, 2014 – At a July 1 Memphis City Council meeting to vote on a proposal concerning health care cuts for retirees, Hunter Pollard, 16, stood up to read a powerful poem. As the son of a police officer and grandson of a retired fire fighter, he understands the importance of public safety and he knows what it’s like to save people for a living, not knowing whether or not they’ll come home that day.

Career Department Here to Stay in Jeannette
July 11, 2014 – Jeannette, PA Local 78 fire fighters, with the support of the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association (PPFFA), campaigned successfully to prevent a proposed referendum to abolish the professional fire department in favor of unpaid volunteers from appearing off the November ballot.

Fire Fighters Push to Keep Career Department in Jeannette
July 7, 2014 –Jeannette, PA Local 78 fire fighters have one more chance to prevent a referendum to abolish the professional fire department in favor of using unpaid volunteers from appearing on the November ballot. The Jeannette City Council will be taking a second and final vote on the matter at the July 9 City Council meeting. Local 78 fire fighters, with assistance from the members of several other Pennsylvania locals, are going door-to-door to encourage the public to oppose the referendum.

Civil Service Board Recommends Reversing Missouri Fire Fighters' Suspensions
June 25, 2014 – Six suspended University City, Missouri, fire fighters represented by the Professional Fire Fighters of Eastern Missouri Local 2665 have been exonerated of any wrong doing by the University City Civil Service Board. Accordingly, the Board has unanimously recommended that the suspensions be lifted, the fire fighters return to work receive full back pay and benefits and remove the suspension from their personnel files.

Camp Pendleton Fire Fighters Raise Thousands for Wildfire Victims
June 19, 2014 – After the Cocos and Poinsetta wildfires in California burned 2,500 acres, 41 homes and 18 apartment units in Escondido, San Marcos and Carlsbad in May, Camp Pendleton Professional Fire Fighters Local F-85 members organized a fundraiser for the victims at Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens. The event raised $18,779 and two freight trucks full of donated furniture and household supplies.

Bellevue Staffing Increased Thanks to SAFER Grant
June 12, 2014 – The Bellevue Fire Department in Nebraska just took two giant leaps toward reaching its goal of having 60-70 full-time fire fighters. The department was awarded a $1.7 million Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant to hire 12 fire fighters. Additionally, the City of Bellevue agreed to budget for an additional nine positions, bringing the total of new full-time fire fighters to 21.

Seattle Local Supports $15 Minimum Wage
June 9, 2014 -- Seattle’s City Council unanimously approved an ordinance June 2 to gradually raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour. The ordinance is of national significance because this will give Seattle the highest minimum wage in America.

East Fork Local 3726 Starts Small, Grows Stronger
June 6, 2014 – When East Fork Fire and Paramedic Employees Association Local 3726 organized on November 23, 1996, in Minden, Nevada, they had just 12 charter members, all paramedics. Today, Local 3726 has grown to 60 members who are not only building a strong, influential IAFF affiliate, but who are working hard to ensure their community receives the best in fire and medical emergency service.

Children Sell Lemonade to Support Suspended Fire Fighters
June 4, 2014 -- The weather cooperated with some big-hearted children in University City, Missouri, for a lemonade stand they organized to support their city's fire fighters who were suspended for three months without pay in retaliation for supporting candidates in the April municipal election. The kids raised $1,269.02.

June 2, 2014 -- A year has passed since a fire swept through a southwest Houston hotel, killing four fire fighters. Houston Mayor Annise Parker joins Houston Fire Department personnel in marking that occasion at a morning ceremony at Houston's Fire Fighter's Pension Hall.

Baltimore County Fire Fighter Dies During Training Exercise
June 1, 2014 -- 58-year-old Baltimore County fire fighter died May 30 after he suffered a suspected heart attack during training, officials said. Robert Fogle III, a 27-year veteran and career fire fighter, was participating in exercises at the Sparrows Point training facility when he became ill. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Fairfax County Fire Fighters Demonstrate Power of Brotherhood
August 9, 2011 – Members of Fairfax County, VA Local 2068 made the day for a beautiful 11-year-old girl ailed with Leukemia. At the request of Federal Fire Fighters of Hawaii Local F-263 President Reid Shimabukuro, 14 Local 2068 members paid a surprise visit to Shimabukuro’s neice, making  a memorable entrance through her hospital window.

Elyria Hires Five New Fire Fighters
August 9, 2011 -- In order to use every dollar provided by a federal grant, the City of Elyria hired five new fire fighters this week, bringing the total force to 75 individuals. Before the SAFER grant was awarded to the City of Elyria in 2009, the City employed 52 fire fighters using general fund dollars. The SAFER grant provides funds for the salaries and benefits of up to 23 additional fire fighters for a period of two years.

New Jersey Fire Fighters Use New Pup to Brighten a Family’s Day 
August 9, 2011 – Last month, fire fighters from Bridgeton, NJ Local 4822 successfully rescued four members of the Rodriguez family who were trapped in their home. The fire - which erupted on the early morning of July 16, 2011 – left two people, including an infant, injured, and a family without the pet that they had all grown to love.

Winnipeg's Summer of Flames
August 4, 2011 -- While Mother Nature kept the mercury hot throughout July, arsonists kept the heat on Winnipeg fire fighters and made it one of the City's worst months ever for blazes and fire-related tragedies. The numbers are stark and stand out not only in the City's history, but also compared to other Canadian cities. Seven people dead, five in a single rooming-house blaze. Eighteen people injured. Twenty-six fire fighters injured while battling the blazes. But there is one number that will never be known: How many more people would have died if not for the bravery of the city's 950 active fire fighters?

Laid-Off Fire Fighters in Taylor Brave Heat to Help Others
July 26, 2011 -- Bryan Schwesing donned his hat and braved the heat and humidity as he walked down the center lane of Eureka Road in Taylor carrying a boot in hopes of raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. As sweat rolled down his face, Schwesing thanked the motorists who rolled down their windows to put dollar bills and coins inside his black-and-yellow boot. Schwesing is one of 19 Taylor fire fighters who were laid off July 1 because of City budget constraints, yet he waved and smiled as he used his time to help others.
